FAKAU BILO, a man in his sixties and a soldier by profession, has a rendezvous with LUFUA (the Angel of Death) before the sun rises. It was MA’NDONA, the fortune teller, who foretold it. Yet just last week, she had assured him that he would be promoted to the rank of general this week. Fakau reminds her of this, but she replies: “The ways of VIDI MUKULU (the Most High) are unfathomable, and everything happens for a very specific reason in the cosmic order.” Suddenly, Lufua appears, and in attempting to kill him, Fakau accidentally kills Ma’Ndona. He then decides to flee from Lufua, who now relentlessly pursues him—unaware that every path he takes inevitably leads him to their destined meeting point
