TSUTSUE

Sowa and Okai, two fishermen’s sons, live in a small Ghanaian town bordered by an open-air dump that flows into the ocean. Haunted by the disappearance of his older brother at sea, Okai believes he sees his body floating among the garbage.

Biography

Born to a Ghanaian father and an American mother, Amartei Armar explores themes of identity, immigration, and belonging in his films, which he writes and directs. Having spent most of his life between two countries and cultures, he currently lives in Accra, Ghana. After studying film in Canada, he has directed several short films, including works in Ghana. His 15-minute fiction short, Tsutsué, a French-Ghanaian co-production, was officially selected for competition at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. He is currently developing his first feature film, Vagabonds, continuing the story from his 2018 short of the same name.
